Watching the play Groomed on Monday evening left a real impact on me and it is an experience that I will remember for a long time. There was such a dizzying range of emotions explored in those fifty minutes, from murderous anger, to fear, to the panic-stricken, painful questioning of why the abuse had happened. Patrick Sandford’s unflinching honesty in confronting the whole spectrum of these reactions was eye opening and really helped my understanding of someone living with the secret of undisclosed abuse.
The power of the play is proven by the conversation it generated in the discussion after the performance, and those that I’ve had with others since seeing it. I believe that the first step to changing the way our society and media views the sexual abuse of men is by having honest, open conversations about it. This play does a fantastic job of getting people talking and thinking.
